The Treasures That Betray Us (Day 1)

Where Your Treasure Hides

"Your heart will follow whatever treasure you seek, and many are seeking A way instead of THE Way."

Matthew 6:19-21 (ESV)

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."

Devotional Thought

Can I just say something that might make you uncomfortable? You probably don't know what you're truly treasuring right now. I know that sounds harsh, but here's what I need you to know: Jeremiah 17:9 tells us the heart is deceitful above all things. This means our hearts are incredibly good at hiding what we really value.

Jesus wasn't giving us financial advice in Matthew 6. He was revealing a spiritual law that works just like gravity. Your heart doesn't stay where you tell it to stay. It goes where your treasure is. So if you want to know what you truly treasure, don't ask yourself what you say you value. Look at where your heart naturally wanders when you're not forcing it to stay put.

Think about it like this...imagine your heart is a compass needle. Whatever you treasure is the magnetic north. You can try to point that needle wherever you want, but the moment you let go, it swings back to what you truly treasure. Your heart is always moving toward something. The question isn't whether your heart will follow. The question is...what treasure is it following?

Jesus gives us two options because He knows we can't avoid choosing. Earthly treasures seem so secure, so tangible, so real. But they're temporary. Moths destroy them. Rust corrupts them. Thieves steal them. And here's the thing...when your treasure disappears, so does your heart. That's the betrayal. The treasure you thought would satisfy you ends up abandoning you.

But heavenly treasures? They last. They endure. They never betray you because they're stored in a place where nothing can touch them. And when your treasure is in heaven, your heart is anchored to something eternal.

Tomorrow, we'll discover how our vision determines what we treasure, and why so many of us are walking in darkness without even realizing it.

Application Questions

  1. If someone examined your calendar, your bank statements, and your thoughts this past week, what would they say you treasure most?

  2. What earthly treasure are you holding onto because you're afraid of what letting go would cost you?

Today's Challenge

Take five minutes of silence today and ask God to reveal one earthly treasure that has captured more of your heart than you realized. Don't defend it. Don't explain it away. Just acknowledge it.

Today's Prayer

Father, I confess that my heart is deceitful and I don't always know what I'm truly treasuring. Give me honest eyes to see where my heart has been wandering. Show me what I've been seeking instead of seeking You. I don't want to discover at the end of my life that I chased treasures that betrayed me. Help me treasure what lasts. In Jesus' name, amen.
