There's Only One Way To Freedom (Day 6)

There's Only One Way To Freedom

You can’t walk in integrity while trying to control the outcome. Freedom comes when you let go of your own light and trust God to guide the way.

Isaiah 50:10-11 (NLT)

10 Who among you fears the Lord and obeys his servant? If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God. 11 But watch out, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves by your own fires. This is the reward you will receive from me: You will soon fall down in great torment.

Devotional Thought

When you're lost in the dark, you have two choices: trust someone with a light or try to make your own. One leads to safety, the other leads to stumbling and falling.

Isaiah paints this exact picture: "If you are walking in darkness, without a ray of light, trust in the Lord and rely on your God. But watch out, you who live in your own light and warm yourselves by your own fires. This is the reward you will receive from me: You will soon fall down in great torment."

Often times, the gap of integrity in our lives begins with us not fully trusting God. We are afraid of what the outcome will look like if we let go of control. So instead of trusting God's light, we create our own light. We make our own loopholes, our own escape hatches, our own backup plans that don't require faith. We look for ways around obedience because we're afraid of where obedience might lead.

But here's the truth: from the very beginning of time, outcome has never been our responsibility. We are created beings. It has never been about outcome. It will always be about obedience!

Just like a farmer can't control the weather but can control whether he plants the seeds, we can't control outcomes, but we can control our obedience. The farmer who trusts the process and plants in faith will see a harvest. The farmer who refuses to plant because he's afraid of drought will never harvest anything. He might spend all his time worrying about what could go wrong, but worrying doesn't produce a crop. Only faithful planting and tending does.

Proverbs 3:5-6 gives us the path: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean upon your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths." That word "acknowledge" is translated "to know." Know Him, lean into Him, trust Him, depend upon Him in all your ways, and He will make straight your paths. He will remove every obstacle.

This is where integrity and trust intersect. We will never experience and walk in true freedom of integrity by trying to create our own way, our own light, or our own loopholes. We will only walk in freedom by giving all of ourselves to Him and trusting in His light. There's only one way to freedom: complete trust in God.

When we trust God fully, we don't need loopholes because we're not trying to protect ourselves or control the outcome. We can simply keep our word because we know God has us. We can walk in integrity because we're depending on Him, not on our ability to manipulate circumstances.

Tomorrow, we'll discover what that freedom actually looks like and how Jesus calls us to step into it right now.

Application Questions

  1. In what area of your life are you trying to create your own light instead of trusting God's
  2. What outcome are you afraid of that keeps you from full obedience?
  3. What would it look like to trust God completely in that area, even if you can't see the outcome?

Today's Challenge

Identify one area where you've been relying on your own understanding instead of trusting God. Surrender it to God today and commit to obedience, regardless of the outcome. Write down your commitment and the date as a reminder.

Today's Prayer

Lord, I confess that I've been trying to control outcomes instead of trusting You. Help me to let go of my need for control and lean completely on You. I choose obedience over outcome. Make my paths straight as I acknowledge You in all my ways. Give me the faith to walk in Your light instead of creating my own. I trust You with every area of my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.

I'm praying...

I’m praying that you’ll have the courage to let go of control and trust God completely. May His light guide every step you take, even when you can’t see the outcome. I’m believing that as you choose obedience over comfort, you’ll discover the freedom that comes from walking in His will and depending fully on His strength.
