A City on a Hill (Day 3)

A City on a Hill
“A city on a hill can’t hide its light—it was built to be seen.”
Matthew 5:14 (ESV)
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.”
Devotional Thought
Just three miles from Nazareth stood Sepphoris—the “ornament of Galilee.” Wealthy, sophisticated, and set on elevated ground, it could be seen for miles. At night, its countless torches and lamps lit up the darkness, a constant reminder that this city could not be ignored.
Jesus would have grown up in the shadow of this city. He likely saw its influence on trade, culture, and even language. He knew its lights shone far beyond its walls. And when He told His disciples, “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden,” it’s hard not to imagine He had that picture in mind.
Here’s the truth: just as Sepphoris shaped Galilee, your life is shaping those around you. People see your light—whether it’s bright, dim, or hidden under discouragement. You may not feel significant, but Christ has placed His light within you to be visible, undeniable, and influential.
And let’s be honest—we often put ourselves down, replay our failures, or convince ourselves we’re not qualified. But Jesus didn’t say, “You might be the light of the world.” He said, “You are.” That means right now, where you are, with all your imperfections, God has called you to shine.
So...
Don’t hide what God has done in your life. Stop focusing on your missteps and start thanking Him for the progress He’s already made. Then let that gratitude move you forward—reaching someone else who needs light in their darkness.

Today's Challenge
Reach out to one person today—through encouragement, prayer, or simple presence—and let the light God has placed in you touch their darkness.

Lord, thank You for saving and filling me with Your light. Forgive me for minimizing what You’ve done in my life. Help me shine brightly, not in pride, but in gratitude—so others can see Your goodness through me. Amen.
