Rediscovering Our Hunger (Day 1)

BLESSED ARE THE HUNGRY

Matthew 5:6 (ESV)

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Jesus didn’t bless the spiritually full — He blessed the spiritually hungry.

Devotional Thought

At the beginning of the greatest sermon ever preached, Jesus makes a radical declaration: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Not the elite. Not the powerful. Not the polished. But the hungry.

In a world that chases satisfaction through success, relationships, wealth, or status, Jesus points to a different kind of fulfillment — one that only comes from longing for Him. This kind of hunger isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of blessing. Hunger means your heart still knows it needs more of God.

Spiritual hunger is a gift. It reminds us we’re made for more than comfort and surface religion. To hunger for righteousness is to long for right relationship with God — to crave His presence, His ways, and His truth. That kind of longing opens the door for true satisfaction. Not the kind the world gives, but the kind that leaves you filled and still longing for more of Him.

So as we begin this week’s journey, let this simple truth settle in: If you’re hungry for God — you’re right where you need to be. Jesus doesn’t reject the hungry. He blesses them.

Application Questions

1. What does spiritual hunger look like in your life right now?
2. In what ways has God stirred a deeper longing in you lately?
3. How can you lean into that hunger instead of ignoring or numbing it?

Today's Challenge

Block out 15 minutes today to sit with God — no agenda, no requests — just silence and Scripture. Ask Him to show you where hunger has faded and where He’s calling you to seek Him again.

Today's Prayer

Jesus, thank You for the blessing that comes with spiritual hunger. I don’t want to be full of things that leave me empty. I want to crave Your presence and righteousness more than anything else. Stir up a holy desire in me — one that leads to the deep satisfaction only You can give. Amen.
