Growing in Meekness (Day 4)

Meekness Anchors My Identity
Matthew 11:29 (ESV)
“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
“Meekness is my attitude toward myself; and it is an expression of that in my relationship to others.”
Devotional Thought
Many of us misunderstand meekness because we misunderstand our identity. We think meekness is self-deprecation or insecurity—but it’s not. It is born out of a right understanding of who we are in Christ.
Jesus was meek, yet completely secure. He knew He was the Son of God. He knew He had power beyond comprehension. Yet He did not need to prove Himself or defend Himself. His meekness flowed from confidence in the Father and clarity about His calling.
Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones captured it well:
“The man who is truly meek is the one who is amazed that God and man can think of him as well as they do and treat him as well as they do.”
That kind of humility anchors us. We don’t need to fight for recognition. We don’t need to dominate conversations. We don’t need to retaliate or manipulate outcomes. We are secure in Christ—loved, valued, chosen. And from that place of deep security, true meekness flows.
When you are rooted in Christ, you are free to treat others with gentleness, patience, and humility—because you no longer need to prove yourself.

Application Questions
- What voices or pressures make you feel like you need to prove yourself to others?
- How does anchoring your identity in Christ free you to practice true meekness?
- In what relationship today could you reflect the meekness of Jesus more clearly?
Today's Challenge
Anchor your identity in Christ today and practice meekness in one interaction:
Before you enter a conversation or meeting today, remind yourself: I am in Christ. I am loved. I have nothing to prove. Then intentionally respond with humility and gentleness, reflecting Jesus’ heart.

Today's Prayer
Jesus, You knew exactly who You were—and that freed You to be gentle, humble, and strong. I want that freedom too. Help me anchor my identity in You, not in what others think or in what I can accomplish. Let Your love shape how I see myself and how I treat others. Grow in me the kind of meekness that honors You and blesses those around me. In Your name, Amen.
