Growing in Meekness (Day 1)

Meekness Begins with a Renewed Mind

Romans 12:2 (ESV)

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.”

“Meekness grows first in the soil of humility.”

Devotional Thought:

In a culture driven by pride, power, and personal ambition, meekness seems almost irrelevant. Yet Jesus says, “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.” True meekness is not weakness—it is strength under control. But where does that kind of strength come from?

It begins with a renewed mind. Before meekness can grow outwardly, it must take root inwardly—in the soil of humility. That’s why Jesus ordered the Beatitudes so intentionally. Poverty of spirit and mourning break up the hardened soil of pride, making space for meekness to flourish.

Paul echoes this in Romans 12:2: transformation starts with renewing your mind. We’ve been conditioned by a world that rewards competition, self-promotion, and retaliation. Meekness runs counter to that flow. It can’t thrive in a mind still shaped by the world’s patterns.

If you find yourself striving for control, defending your reputation, or clinging to comparison—pause. Ask the Spirit to renew your mind today. Remember: a proud heart can’t sustain genuine meekness, but a humble heart—softened by God’s truth—can.

Application Questions:

  1. In what areas of your life do you still think and act according to the world’s patterns of pride or control?
  2. How has poverty of spirit and mourning prepared your heart to cultivate true meekness?
  3. What’s one practical step you can take today to renew your mind in God’s truth and humility?

Today's Challenge:

Practice one act of meekness today:
Look for a moment where you would normally assert control, defend your opinion, or seek recognition. Instead, choose humility—entrust the outcome to God. Respond with gentleness and grace, reflecting Jesus’ strength under control.

Today's Prayer:

Father, I confess that my mind is so often shaped by the world’s ways. I long to be renewed by Your truth. Teach me to embrace poverty of spirit, to mourn over sin, and to cultivate meekness from a place of humility. Let Your Spirit transform my thinking and my heart. May my strength be controlled by Your Spirit and expressed through love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
