Those Who Mourn (Day 2)

What Kind of Mourning?
“Not all mourning leads to comfort. But those who mourn the sin that made them poor will be comforted.”
2 Corinthians 7:10 (ESV)
“For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.”
Devotional Thought:
Jesus said, “Blessed are those who mourn…” but not all mourning is the same. The Bible presents a striking contrast: worldly grief vs. godly grief.
Worldly grief is loud, even emotional—but it centers on what we lost, not on what we did. It’s the sorrow of Babylon in Revelation 18—mourning not because of sin, but because their luxuries were taken away. Their tears flowed from judgment, not repentance.
Godly grief, by contrast, is the grief of someone who sees what sin has broken—and can’t pretend anymore. It’s the grief that says, “This isn’t just a mistake—it’s rebellion against God.” That kind of mourning moves heaven because it opens the door to true comfort. It leads to repentance, restoration, and a heart aligned with God's.
So, when you mourn—what kind of mourning is it?
Are your tears about what’s been taken from you…
…or about what you’ve taken from God?

Application Questions:
- How can you tell the difference between worldly grief and godly grief in your life?
- Is there an area where you’ve felt sorrow, but haven’t yet repented?
- What would it look like to let your mourning today lead you into deeper intimacy with God?
Today's Prayer:
Father, I don’t want to mourn like the world mourns. I want to grieve over what grieves Your heart. Teach me to see sin clearly—not just its consequences, but its cost. I surrender my sorrow to You, and I ask You to make it holy. Let it lead to repentance, not regret. Let it bring me to the cross, not into shame. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
